Gulfport Senior Advisory Committee Update

2/9/04

Early in Spring of 2003, members of the Gulfport Senior Advisory Committee unanimously agreed to reinforce their prior commitment to establish a non-profit Foundation to benefit the Senior Center.

Committee Chairperson Jane D. Ogilvie, Susan Frank, Senior Center Supervisor, Sarah Peel, Senior Services Coordinator, and Committee members Helen Adornato, William R. Wolf, and John A. Milford met with Attorney Karen Keaton to begin working on a revised Articles of Incorporation. In November the Articles were filed with the State, and the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) corporation, was established.

Senior Advisory Committee members are proud of these accomplishments, and look forward to future related endeavors. If you would like to make a donation to the Foundation or would like more information about it, please contact the Gulfport Senior Center at (727) 893-2237 or (727) 893- 1231.

Communities for a Lifetime Update

January 28, 2004

Gulfport, Florida

A meeting was held on January 26th to introduce City management and officials to the Communities For A Lifetime (CFAL) project. Informational folders supplied by the Florida Dept. of Elder Affairs, were available for distribution. A Power Point presentation from the Dept. was used in conjunction with material from other sources.

Presenters included Sue Frank, Gulfport Senior Center Supervisor, Sarah Peel, the Centers Senior Services Coordinator, and Senior Advisory Board Chairperson, Jane D. Ogilvie, Consultant for Senior Solutions of Pinellas County. The idea to pursue this project was approved without dissent by the Gulfport Senior Advisory Committee.

In May 2003, a proclamation of intent to participate was officially approved by City Officials. The proclamation was sent to Tallahassee and filed with the Dept. of Elder Affairs. Since May, project information has been gathered by presenters, organized, and planning sessions have occurred.
The meeting last Monday night, was the second step in a series of tasks which must be completed in order to obtain State designation as a Community for a Lifetime. Success with this project will in large part be based on support from our City officials and department managers.

A second meeting is being planned in which the CFAL project will be introduced to the public. Residents and business owners in Gulfport, and various other entities and will be invited to attend.

Task force assessment teams will be formed to evaluate at least seven areas of discovery. Teams will inventory and evaluate current situations and programs available related to: Physical Spaces, Transportation, Land Use, Community Development, Health, Education, and Cultural/Social. Needs will be identified and improvements planning will begin.

Gulfport's participation in this State wide initiative, is intended to assist the community in planning for the future, recognizing demographic changes beginning in 2010, and the need to positively respond to challenges such as new technologies, changing workforce and economy, lacking intergenerational communication, inaccessible community facilities and resources, fragility of the environment, potential for disasters, the desire to establish a more organized community for people of all ages.
