All speakers concurred that it is necessary to continue to try and "educate" the public. They also agree that this needs to be an ongoing effort.
Despite the information and warnings that have been issued to the public regarding fraudulent schemes, there are still many vulnerable people who find themselves disappointed and sometimes financially destroyed as a result of "too good to be true", "Miracle Cures", and "You're a Winner" type advertising.
The recent Sweepstakes Legislation was discussed as an indication that this problem is being recognized, and attempts are being made to further protect the vulnerable. Other programs in place here in Florida through the Dept. of Elder Affairs and partners such as the Food and Drug Administration, Law Enforcement Agencies, and the Dept. of Insurance are:
1. The SHINE program which addresses all questions and issues related to insurance needs of the Elderly.
2. The Elder Update publication for Seniors throughout the State of Florida.
3. The Senior Helpline through the Area Agency on Aging.
4. "Fraud Busters" - Volunteers through Food and Drug Administration who are available through County Extension offices to provide fraud related presentations to Senior Groups.
5. Crimes Against the Elderly Program - Established to track schemes between 2 or more Counties in the State.
6. Victim's Advocate - Individual through the Area Agency on Aging that guides people through court procedures and provides referral for assistance when they have been abused in any way.
These are just a few of the programs which were discussed. Others are out there.
