Medicare Update from U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt

The Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center welcomed Secretary Leavitt, Florida Congressman Bill Young, and others last Tuesday, June 21, 2005 to a "Town Hall"- like meeting to discuss upcoming changes in the Medicare program.

The Secretary began his "Message" by saying that "For the first time, Medicare will include prescription drug coverage" and that this may be "one of the most profound changes in healthcare in the past fifty years".

Upcoming changes to Medicare beneficiaries will now include a "one time preventive" physical for those coming into the program. Secretary Leavitt believes that prevention plays a key role in promoting good health, and also feels it helps to keep healthcare costs down in the long run.
This benefit will become available beginning January 6, 2006.

Also new to Medicare will be an assortment of plans for beneficiaries to choose from.

According to the Secretary, approximately "one-third" of those eligible for Medicare or who are currently on Medicare and Medicaid, "will have their prescription drugs paid for". Approximately "two-thirds" of those eligible for Medicare or who are current Medicare beneficiaries, will pay somewhere "between thirty and forty dollars" more a month for their prescription drug benefits.

In the Fall of this year, we're to be on the lookout for a Medicare booklet to arrive in our mailboxes. Inside will be an explanation of these new benefits. As of November 15th, people can begin to enroll. Social Security will also be sending letters to tell you if you're already covered, or invite you to fill out a form to see if you qualify. ( You may have already received this letter. I received one on Thursday last week for a client of mine). S.H.I.N.E. volunteers will also be able to help explain the changes.

Secretary Leavitt asked, "Why is this important"? He had three answers. First, "You'll save money". Second, "Better health". Third, " Peace of Mind".

We were directed to call Medicare if we have any questions, or go to the internet site at:
www.medicare.gov

The Secretary concluded his remarks and offered to take a few questions. Someone asked, "What about drugs that aren't approved by Medicare"? The answer, "Anything that's medically necessary". He said, "Choose the plan that best fits your needs. "There are several plans where it'll all be covered".

Another in the crowd asked, "I get some of my benefits through the Veteran's Administration. Will civilian treatment be covered"? Answer, "Sign up".

The meeting was concluded and many stayed to shake hands and speak personally to the Secretary, Congressman Young, and others.

Out in the parking lot, cameras were flashing. I thought it would be great to have a picture taken with the Secretary, and the two women I work so closely with on Senior issues here in Gulfport. It's certainly not everyday that someone of the Secretary's stature comes to Gulfport, Florida.
